Astoria, Queens · Opening soon
Four letters, four habits.
DOPA isn't only where dopamine comes from — it's the four things the mat asks of you, every class, every round.
Discipline
Show up when you don't feel like it. The mat rewards the consistent long before it rewards the gifted.
Ownership
Tap, learn, adjust, come back. Your progress is yours — nobody can roll the round for you.
Precision
Leverage over force. The right detail in the right place beats size and strength every time.
Adaptation
Every roll is a new problem. You learn to stay calm and find the answer while it's still moving.

Jiu-jitsu has shaped every part of my life. It taught me discipline when I lacked direction, confidence when I doubted myself, and introduced me to a community that became family.
After more than 14 years of training and over six years of teaching students across New York City, I knew exactly what I wanted my own academy to be.
DOPA was built to create the kind of environment where beginners feel welcome, experienced practitioners continue to grow, and every student is treated with genuine respect. Whether you're stepping onto the mats for the first time or preparing for your next competition, you'll receive the same attention, encouragement, and commitment.
My goal isn't simply to teach techniques—it's to help people become more confident, disciplined, and resilient both on and off the mats.
One student. One family. One class at a time.

The honest FAQ
Still wondering something? Ask us anything when you join the founding list.
Yes — you're exactly who Foundations is for. Your first classes are slow, taught step by step, and full of other beginners. Nobody expects you to know anything on day one.
No, and please don't wait. Jiu-jitsu is how you get in shape. You set the pace, you tap whenever you want, and you'll be surprised how fast your body catches up.
No. You are taught and you drill first — nobody is thrown into live rolling before they're ready. When you do start, it's controlled and with someone who's looking out for you.
Completely — almost everyone is. The whole point of DOPA is that the nerves are gone by the end of your first class. Come as you are; we'll take it from there.
For your first class: a t-shirt, athletic shorts or leggings, and a water bottle. Trim your nails and leave the jewelry at home. If you don't own a gi yet, we'll sort you out.
The gi is the traditional kimono — you grip it, and the pace is more methodical. No-gi swaps it for a rashguard and shorts: faster, sweatier, and the ruleset behind most modern grappling. Most people train both.
Yes — ages 4 to 14, split into age groups so the youngest build coordination and confidence while the older kids learn real technique. It's focus, discipline, and how to stand up to a bully without throwing a punch.
